Good afternoon!
We have been busy in room 16! I hope that you have been able to check us out on Twitter/ our classroom blog to see all of the exciting things that we have been up to-- even with ALL of this PARCC/ MCAS assessing!
Here are some wonderful examples of what we have been busy with and a look ahead at all of the amazing adventures we have coming up to end our 5th grade year with as much passion as possible!
A LOOK BACK...
- Thank you to all of the parents who helped make our surprise party for our high school senior, Emily, a truly special day. I had the honor of watching Emily present to the high school staff and juniors to explain what the senior project entails. It was an incredible experience, and I cannot tell you just how much my students were able to grow thanks to Emily.
Here is a link to the slideshow she presented-- it was awesome!!
Emily's Senior Project Presentation
- Passion Projects have taken over our classroom in the best way possible. I have seen such amazing growth and maturity in each child. I cannot wait for you to see the final round of projects after our 5th grade celebration:
5th Grade Celebration: 6/21 at 10:00 am in the gymnasium
Passion Project celebration: immediately following the celebration (refreshments will be served)
- We have been reading the book Pax (next year's Global Read Aloud!) and loving every second. Not only are we able to connect the text to so many other shared texts from the year, but this book is truly letting me see how my students have become amazingly strong readers! They think about text on such a deep level, are able to recognize author's craft, and use that to help develop thinking even further. Pax is a beautiful book, and I highly recommend it if you are looking for a good read!
- Students have been taking ownership over Social Studies... they had to read several different scenarios about what happened to the colony at Roanoke Island and come up with what they believe happened and why. The students did a great job using critical thinking skills and collaborating to make their arguments even stronger!
- Math- Now that PARCC is over, we are spending time diving back into old concepts, learning new ones, and honing problem solving skills. We began building a Geometry City project that the students are really excited about.
- Writer's Workshop- moving onto our last (and my favorite!) genre... Personal Narrative. This week we focused on examples of excellent author's craft and brainstorming K-5 elementary memories. The students will finish typing their elementary school memory essay tomorrow.
- Science- The students loved building circuits and discovering all of the ways that they could create open and closed circuits. Many students figured out how to power motors and light bulbs in different capacities!
- Passion Project vocabulary has taken over our spelling program. The students are helping design this as it is so much more meaningful and they are getting a lot out of each week!
LOOKING AHEAD:
- Our egg drop is scheduled for:
Wednesday June 8, 1:50-2:20
We hope you can join us! We are running everything differently than in the past, so take a look to see some awesome changes that are really helping to make the egg drop a much richer and more engineering-based activity.
Cowell "Save the Egg"
